An armed standoff at a downtown office building in Bakersfield, Calif ended early Wednesday morning when FBI agents fatally shot a man who had held multiple hostages inside for more than 15 hours.

Officials said the incident began at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday when the Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of a bomb threat at the facility, located at Chester Avenue and 17th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a man had barricaded himself inside the financial institution with an undisclosed number of captives. While several individuals managed to flee the building during the initial chaos, others remained trapped inside.

The situation escalated into a broader emergency response involving local law enforcement and federal agents, with the FBI later taking part in the operation as the standoff continued inside a nearby office building. Local law enforcement immediately established a perimeter, evacuated nearby structures—including the Bakersfield City Hall and police headquarters located just one block away—and shut down surrounding roadways. A massive tactical response ensued, drawing local SWAT teams, bomb squads, and crisis negotiators.

Throughout Tuesday evening, crisis negotiators maintained telephone contact with the suspect, with their efforts successfully leading to the staggered release of two hostages. The scale of the emergency drew significant local attention, drawing onlookers and independent broadcasters to the perimeter. “We have every single resource at our disposal out here to bring this to the safest resolution possible,” Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon said Tuesday as the operation unfolded.

The prolonged situation escalated to a fatal confrontation at approximately 4:20 a.m. Wednesday. The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed that the standoff “concluded following an officer-involved shooting” executed by FBI personnel. Local police stated their department’s officers did not discharge their weapons during the final tactical intervention.
