Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is publicly expressing his desire to spend the remainder of his professional career with the franchise.
Taylor, 27, who signed a three-year, $42 million extension in 2023 following a contentious contract dispute and trade request, said he would welcome a new agreement before the start of the 2026 season. During a mandatory minicamp press conference on Wednesday, Taylor stated to reporters that he has officially communicated his long-term goals to team management, explicitly noting, “I’d love to be a Colt for life.” The running back added that his preference is to solidify a new financial agreement before the upcoming regular season kicks off, though he acknowledged that the ultimate resolution remains highly uncertain.
The situation marks a stark contrast to the uncertainty surrounding Taylor’s contract three years ago. Since then, he has re-established himself as one of the league’s top running backs, producing more than 3,000 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Analysts have identified Taylor and All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson as two of the Colts’ biggest upcoming financial priorities, with both players entering contract years.
According to salary-tracking sites Spotrac and Over the Cap, Taylor is scheduled to earn $13 million in 2026 and carries a cap hit of roughly $15.6 million. Despite the shorter shelf life typically associated with running backs, Taylor’s recent production has strengthened his case for another lucrative deal.
Whether an extension is completed before the regular season remains uncertain, but Taylor emphasized that his preference is to remain in Indianapolis. Both player and team appear interested in continuing the relationship, though reaching a new agreement will require what Taylor described as a process that “takes two to tango.”
