The Carolina Hurricanes moved within one victory of a Stanley Cup championship Thursday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 5 at Lenovo Center to grab a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven final.
After falling behind on Pavel Dorofeyev’s first-period power-play goal, Carolina answered with four straight scores. Captain Jordan Staal tied the game and extended his scoring streak to five consecutive games, while Andrei Svechnikov delivered two power-play goals and Sebastian Aho added his first goal of the series. Nikolaj Ehlers contributed three assists, and goaltender Brandon Bussi turned aside 23 shots in his second straight start.
The Hurricanes capitalized on Vegas penalties to seize control in the second period. Svechnikov put Carolina ahead with a man-advantage goal before Aho stretched the lead late in the frame. Svechnikov struck again in the third after a double-minor penalty against Vegas captain Mark Stone, giving the Hurricanes a three-goal cushion.
Dorofeyev scored again late in the third to cut the deficit, but the Golden Knights could get no closer. Jack Eichel recorded assists on both Vegas goals, while the club also lost forward William Karlsson during the game. Carolina’s victory marked its second straight win after evening the series in Las Vegas and continued the strong play of Bussi, who has stabilized the net after replacing Frederik Andersen.
Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where the Hurricanes will attempt to secure the franchise’s first Stanley Cup title since 2006 – while the Golden Knights face elimination and seek to force a decisive seventh game back in Raleigh.
