American challenger Justin Gaethje delivered one of the biggest victories of his career Sunday night, orchestrating a monumental upset against the previously undefeated Ilia Topuria on the South Lawn of the White House to secure the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title on Sunday evening

The historic 155-pound championship clash headlined UFC Freedom 250, a unique outdoor event organized in conjunction with national 250th anniversary festivities and attended by more than 4,000 spectators, including President Donald Trump. The card, held as part of celebrations surrounding the United States’ 250th anniversary, marked the first major professional sporting event hosted at the presidential residence.

Topuria entered the main event as a heavy favorite and appeared in control through the opening rounds, using pressure, body attacks and grappling to frustrate Gaethje. The veteran American weathered the storm and shifted momentum in the third round, landing a series of damaging punches that left the champion bloodied and visibly compromised. Gaethje continued to press the action in the fourth, forcing Topuria to absorb significant punishment as swelling around his face worsened. After doctors evaluated Topuria between rounds, his corner elected to stop the contest before the fifth round began, handing Gaethje a fourth-round TKO victory and the undisputed title. The win completed a long pursuit of championship gold for Gaethje, who had previously fallen short in multiple opportunities to capture the division’s top prize.

The co-main event also produced a title change, as France’s Ciryl Gane stopped Alex Pereira in the second round to secure the interim heavyweight championship. Pereira had been attempting to become the UFC’s first fighter to win titles in three different weight classes. Elsewhere on the card, Sean O’Malley defeated Aiemann Zahabi, while Bo Nickal, Diego Lopes, Mauricio Ruffy and Josh Hokit all earned stoppage victories on a night dominated by finishes.

The triumphant performance improved Gaethje’s overall professional record to 28-5, solidifying his status as the oldest competitor to ever capture the undisputed UFC lightweight championship. “I prayed so much for this opportunity, to do something legendary, and I know that was absolutely legendary – because I cannot even believe it,” Gaethje remarked during his post-fight interview. Reflecting on the tactical path required to overcome the early adversity, the newly crowned champion added, “I knew I was gonna have to get through the first round, his skills are unmatched when he’s fresh. But my durability, my tenacity and my heart were going to carry me through.”
